God became man-incarnate splendor
Left his seat from on high
To give life that lasts forever
Show us how to live and die
Love and peace he was full
Beyond perfection knew no wrong
Fully man, a pure and perfect soul
This life on Earth did not last long
We put to death our perfect man
Killing God’s only beloved Son
Platitudes of love prove trite
When man wills his will be done
He gave his life so love we’d know
He’d suffer if I alone transgressed
To the foot of his cross I must go
And weep for my soul with lowly chest
I was with you in the garden
My soul failed to keep guard
It was I who scourged the son of man
Wounding your most sacred heart
I placed upon you a crown of thorns
Mocking the king who all should serve
Replacing worship with vile scorn
Heaping insults as he gave his final words
I gave you the weight of my sins
Gave all strength in your sacred bones
Insulted you still as you redeemed men
Lord, you have suffered and you alone
At last you gave your sacred peace
And God hung on the tree and died
From the chair of your cross you did teach
God’s love for man personified
You gave your life a ransom for me
My life is yours for you to keep
Without my Lord I cannot see
So, keep me close your broken sheep
